University of Washington Harborview Research and Training Facility (HRT) – OSC Staff engaged in and incident response and recovery action as a result of a breach of cesium (cs)-137 source and subsequent contamination of the seven-story structure and adjacent land areas surrounding the facility. The HRT Building is part of the University of Washington (UW) Medical Center.
Health & Environmental Risks
Radiological impacts and high potential to remobilize contamination to adjacent systems and outside the building.
Structural considerations included selective dismantling of HVAC duct without impacting or damaging adjacent systems.
Our Solution
Comprehensive programmatic planning and coordination with Perma-Fix, University of Washington, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Washington Department of Health.
Decommissioning and selective dismantlement of impacted equipment and infrastructure, primarily ductwork, associated with three separate ventilation systems.
Sealed utility chases had to be penetrated to access and extract the impacted ductwork and contamination was encapsulated prior to removal by applying an adhesive encapsulate on the interior of the ducts.
